I'm having trouble finding many sources. I don't mean for it to sound like a sales pitch. It probably sounds like one because the company is one of my sources. Any suggestions. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Smann2 (talk contribs) 00:16, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Humungous Image Tagging Project

[edit]

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

Biogeogr & Landscape Ecol

[edit]

Biogeography and Landscape Ecology are very different - Biogeography deals with a very different spatial scale, and also deals with species, rarely with populations, energy flows, or interactions. There are some similarities, but they are quite distinct. As soon as I have the time I will edit the articles to make that distinction Guettarda 17:10, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Ecology Series

[edit]

Actually I don't know that much more about the structure of something like that than you do - I just know it can be done, I have seen it done. It was your edits that got me to thinking about the structure of the whole page. Hopefully some more experienced people will add things to it...it's something to work on over the break.

Separate question - you mention you are a physicist turned ecologist. I am curious about the level you are working at, and the extent to which you have "turned ecologist" - is this simply an interest, or are you working at it academically? Guettarda 23:08, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC

Academically. I am currently seeking PhD in Bioengineering focusing on complex systems. The complex systems I am studying right now are microbial ecosystems. (hence my other contribs to archaea and acid mine drainage) I kind of backed into ecology, so I've only done limited coursework. Most of this stuff I've picked up from the folks I'm working with. pH

[edit]

Can you clarify this pH issue please. I note that you have reverted a pH 2 to pH -3. This doesn't make sense. Acidic mine drainage can certainly be more acidic that pH3 because of the presence of high concentration of sulphate ion but it doesn't approach the pH of strong mineral acids which can be down at pH 0.5 or lower. However pH -3 doesn't make sense in this context. Can you clarify please ?

I know it sounds crazy, but it's true. I've actually already been called on it (see Talk:Acid mine drainage for my references). I'm currently studying the genetics and ecology of these microbes and I was amazed when I heard that they created such an environment and seem capable of living in it. Although to be fair, they seem to prefer the (slightly) more reasonable pH of 0.7. Jmeppley 19:42, 18 Jan 2005 (UTC)

complex it is

[edit]

Whoa, when i first heard of Metagenomics, I immediately thought of complex systems, emergence, etc. Then I saw you (a biologist?) started the MG page, and are also interested in these systems... but there is no information whatsoever on this subject on the MG page... Hmmm interesting practically application. Whats the current state of affairs in Complex systems? Ill check out that page. Goodluck, NoLogin (Daniël)

Environment project

Hello. I would like to welcome you to participate in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Environment and help sort out articles relating to the environment. Can I also interest you in voting for moving Category:Environmentalism to Category:Environment. See Wikipedia:Categories for_deletion. Alan Liefting 06:21, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Kingdoms

[edit]

JM, I've just started work here, and I am limiting myself primarily to biology and libraries (yes, I am a biology librarian) (previously molecular biologist) I'm not an ecologist, though I know some. And i have a special taste for classification, which comes up in both my subjects.

I've been working tonight on the "Kingdom" page, and I've put some talk there, but without changing the article yet. I very much appreciate the relevance of your citations, and I'm glad there's someone like you there already. It seems that I need to look first at the overall organization of the biology pages, because they are of course all interrelated. There's a point to dividing up the work, but not to working at cross purposes--and it does seem to me as a relative outsider that the WP method is extremely susceptible to cross purposes. I'd like to talk further with you--you can email me from my page DGG 06:19, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Complex systems

[edit]

Thank you for your contribution to the complex system article in the past. Currently there is a Call for Deletion for the associated Category:Complex systems covering this interdisplinary scientific field. If you would like to contribute to the discussion, you would be very welcome. Please do this soon if possible since the discussion period is very short. Thank you for your interest if you can contribute. Regards, Jonathan Bowen 14:44, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Earth Day!

Hello! Wishing you a Happy Earth day on the behalf of WikiProject Environment and WikiProject Ecology.

When man tries to fight nature, he invariably loses. Nature invariably wins. It is only when man is wise enough to live with nature that he really gets anywhere.
