Biometrics is on its move.. By the fact that the US are introducing biometric passports (using fingerprints) by next November and the EU introducing in 2007 new ID-cards with multiple biometric profiles like fingerprint and iris, biometrics is becoming the hottest technology issues in the near future. Everyone has to relate to this new technology, but what are the personal risks, how well will these new passports and ID-cards protect each one of us from fraud? Can a potential misuse be achieved just by replacing ones biometrics profiles with another person? Of course not, they will be individual crypted by a key that is not stored on the passport/ID card, but again, keys has been known to be cracked or stolen? To improve the security even more one can distort the information in the biometric profiles, but how well will that work? Each one of us should take care and make sure that these biometrics passport, ID cards, drivers licence, ATM cards etc are secure and safe from being misused as the authentication by biometric profiles are better than anything else of today and should be considered as a step forward in securing our personal security and interests.
