Chord changes for "What's Goin' On

[edit]

There's a claim based on Ben Edmond's book on Marvin Gaye that major and minor 7th chords were "unusual" in pop music at the time "What's Goin' On" was written and recorded. That's easily disproved by looking at a chart of the biggest singles of 1970. "Close to You", "We've Only Just Begun", "I'll Be There", "Fire and Rain", "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head"...the major 7th chord was everywhere in 1970 and 1971. It wasn't in every hit, but it was hardly rare or unusual. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 157.131.221.129 (talk) 01:13, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What's Going OnWhat's Going On (Marvin Gaye album)The album may be more popular than the titular song, but both are recognized for a very long time in terms of award recognitions and background histories. If moved, the view numbers for the album will go down drastically. George Ho (talk) 00:23, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why?

[edit]

Why was this moved again? No one is searching for the other albums also named What's Going On, this album should be the primary destination. It's totally unnecessary. Gareth E Kegg (talk) 00:33, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. This level of disambiguation is unnecessary. Ghmyrtle (talk) 08:18, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This constant forking and nitpicking. Is WP:MANONTHECLAPHAMOMNIBUS a policy? It should be. Gareth E Kegg (talk) 18:35, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What's Going On (Marvin Gaye album)What's Going On – I understand the thinking behind the recent move request; however, as the overwhelming amount of readers are looking for either the song or the album, by moving the primary name to a disamb page, the bulk of readers are arriving on the wrong page and are needing to click through to their desired destination after being distracted by the disamb page. It would be preferable to direct readers to either the album or the song, and then provide a hat note: "This article is about the album/song, for the song/album, click here, for other possible meanings, click here". As the album gets 30% to 40% more readers per month, that would indicate it's the more likely contender for being the primary topic, though using the song as the primary topic would also be acceptable. Survey

Feel free to state your position on the renaming proposal by beginning a new line in this section with *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''', then sign your comment with ~~~~. Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's policy on article titles.
The reasons are as stated above: under the current system thousands of readers every month are landing in the wrong place and are being momentarily distracted. Doing a little bit of dab fixing is preferable to expecting readers to deal with landing on the wrong page. When we look at naming articles, we are mainly concerned with readers being able to find what they want quickly and easily. The current title for an article that gets over 10,000 hits a month is inappropriate.
I don't see a problem with indicating that I am supporting as proposer as I made it clear in my comment. If that has confused you, however, I'm sorry - that wasn't the intention. SilkTork ✔Tea time 08:59, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
What evidence do you have that anyone would land on What's Going On (Marvin Gaye album) not wanting What's Going On (Marvin Gaye album) ? How exactly? In ictu oculi (talk) 09:12, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@SilkTork, that question is actually currently the topic of discussion at Wikipedia talk:Disambiguation. You may want to make your view known there also. Cheers! bd2412 T 16:53, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Procedural note: While fewer RMs have an "as proposer" (or "as nominator," etc.) vote than don't, it's an accepted practice per WP:RMCM. --BDD (talk) 19:50, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Support. None of the disambiguation entries are as relevant as the album, so it can be a time-saver. 2804:14D:1C79:9C7C:F137:A327:A0C8:8EFA (talk) 22:00, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Good Article

Can someone who's contributed to this article nominate it for WP:GA? Seems like it at least deserves that. Would be cool to get this to featured some day. TlonicChronic (talk) 01:12, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What's Going On (Marvin Gaye album)What's Going On (album) – This album is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC by a sufficient margin to justify a WP:PDAB. When compared to the other albums by this name – What's Going On (Johnny "Hammond" Smith album), What's Going On (Dirty Dozen Brass Band album), and a partial title match at What's Goin' On (Frank Strozier album) – Gaye's album receives 146.9 times the average monthly pageviews of the other three albums combined. This pageview ratio is comfortably within the precedents for partial disambiguation. The long-term significance criterion also favors this album above the other topics: Gaye's album is often counted among the greatest albums of all time by reputable music publications (e.g. [1], [2], [3], etc.), a level of notability and acclaim that significantly exceeds what any of the other same-named albums have received.
