United States Senate

[edit]

In the Senate page, you reverted the markup changes that were made. Is there any reason for that? It seemed to be a good way to decrease the bandwith.--sebmol 02:24, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)

  • The changes made by User:68.126.255.210 looked to me to be awkward. If you see it differently, change it back. I will not revert your edit. :) Kingturtle 02:29, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)

14 Jan Detroit revert

I disagree with the revert you made to Detroit, Michigan yesterday (14 January). I asked for opinions on Talk:Detroit, and would greatly value your input. foobaz· 08:23, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Surrealism

I'd like you to consider removing page protection after reviewing the discussion there. I feel it is possible to move forward and complete the article with the range of contributors.

More Surrealism

[edit]

Could you review the talk page? I am RFCing both Boyer and 24. because there is simply no way to work on this article with both of them treating it as a personal web page, and their constant attacks and rants. In addition, Boyer is making edits to other articles based on his intent to promote his own work, including attacks on known scholars etc.My own POV is that both should be banned permanently, as their contributions, such as they are, are far outweighed by the problems the create. Stirling Newberry 19:15, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Purge in the main page

[edit]

After your removal of the word purge from the news section, I looked up the web to find different connotations (or are they denotations?) of the word. I would like to point you to this and purge. -- Sundar 08:32, Feb 1, 2005 (UTC)

  • I fully understand that. however, in an international news listing, the word tends to drum up Stalin's Great Purge notion. that's why i changed it. Kingturtle 01:22, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The left sock of vampires?

[edit]

I did a google search. It appears the nonsense with the left sock of vampires isn't nonsense (or nor more nonsense than the rest of vampire myths). Poor 66.82.9.37 is probably a legit newbie wondering why the addition isn't allowed. Revert your revert? -- A D Monroe III 02:43, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

There's a WORLD of difference between the Miller article and a stub. Even assuming that your "rationale" that because we don't allow stubs we shouldn't allow "sloppy" articles was legitimate (which, I don't believe it is), you have not explained WHY the Miller article is sloppy. What needs cleanup? I've removed the cleanup tag from the article, as no one has given any reason for it being there. --Dante Alighieri | Talk 00:29, Feb 12, 2005 (UTC)

  • THIS is the version i put the cleanup notice on. it was in serious need of cleaning up - and not the sort of article we want to show off to someone who happens upon wikipedia. since that edit, Lukobe and Hajor did some marvelous copyediting, and now the article is something worth seeing. Deletions on day pages

[edit]

Hi there,

Is there some sort of guideline which people should be included in Wikipedia, but not on the day pages?

I feel it would be preferable if you would just expand the short summaries a bit. --05 20:57, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Policy re: day-of-the-year articles?

[edit]

is there somewhere in wikipedia a written set of guidelines about what and not what to include on the individual day-of-the-year articles? or are we just using gut instinct to discern what should and shouldn't be there? Kingturtle 22:02, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Deletion on Vomiting

[edit]

Please do not simply delete material that you may not like. Please engage in the discussion page your views and concerns. Regardless, a link styled with a caution has been placed on the page which should be acceptable; however, this is an ilistrated work, and one should expect to see a photo of vomiting when going to an article on vomiting Glen Larson

Thank you!

I don't understand your copyedit of this article, you removed the place of birth and

"Coogan utilizes video and photographs in her live perfomance."

is not true, she produces video and photographs from her live performances, not the same. Why remove the Irish Times quote? Notjim 22:40, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I paraphrased the quote because I couldn't tell what the quote was from. It said "In (Aidan Dunne 2005)". If you can re-write it with the correct syntax, i support you doing so. Kingturtle 01:04, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)
You have now changed it to "Coogan she produces video and photographs from her live performances." What was wrong with the reference (Aidan Dunne 2005) refered to an article in the reference list using what I understand to be the house style. Why remove her place of birth?Notjim 10:41, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)
like i said, (Aidan Dunne 2005) is confusing. i've not seen that syntax used in wikipedia. if you know what it is supposed to mean, then make the appropriate fixes, but use standard wikipedia syntax. Kingturtle 18:03, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)
From Wikipedia:Cite your sources:
In addition to listing a reference at the end, you may choose to embed a pointer to a particular reference within the article text. To do this, cite references parenthetically as "(Author-Last-Name, Year)". Use the original publication year for a re-published work. If the cited information is not easy to find with just that information (for example, it's a poorly indexed topic in a large book), add chapters ("chap. 3") or pages ("p. 15" or "pp. 12–23") after the year (separating the two with a comma). When a reference is used as a noun, put the year in parentheses, e.g. "Milton (1653) says..." For two authors, use (Author1 & Author2, year); for more authors, use (Author1 et al., Year).
So I was almost right, it should have been (Dunne 2005).
Also it seems wrong to just delete information as you did in this case.Notjim 19:46, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)
I don't think that syntax is appropriate in this case. let me give it a shot as to what i think it should look like - if you disagree, please change it. Kingturtle 21:57, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Ok I agree with this, thanks a million for you help. Notjim 23:02, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)

article on Jimmy Carter

[edit]

I was wondering why you took out the line mentioning Carter's sister Gloria. While she is probably not as news worthy as his other sister or his brother, one line doesn't seem unreasonable, and I thought it looks sort of funny listing only two of his siblings.

Best regards, Morris 18:25, Feb 16, 2005 (UTC)

Puzzled

[edit]

I'm puzzled by your edit in Housatonic River. The kind of phrasing is fairly standard in the river articles. Just wondering. -- Decumanus 08:41, 2005 Feb 18 (UTC)

  • From what I understand, in the case of a river, rise as a noun means place of origin, while rise as a verb means to increase in size, volume, or level. But I may be wrong. And although the weather service occassionally uses "extreme western" to describe the area, it is not common. I am not opposed to reverting my changes, though. Kingturtle 22:01, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Republics

[edit]

Need your help and/or advice. The British Wikipedian Republican Party sought fit to delete Wikinfo:Classical definition of republic from Wikipedia. There is a terrible brouhaha at Talk:Republic. They won't even allow an external link! SimonP really doesn't know what he is doing. They deleted the Classical definition of republic and created mixed government and politeia instead. The official title of mixed government is a Republic and the Romans translated "politiea" as Republic. And then to top it off the new article Classical republicanism doesn't refer to the Classical republics of Crete, Sparta, Solonic Athens, or Rome but to Machiavelli's ideology. How can that be when Venice in the 13th century instituted a mixed government and called herself a "Republic".

With Jwrosenwieg and Kim Bruning there was a tacit agreement a year ago to have republic be the modern meaning and a [Classical definition of republic] to describe the ancient republics of Hellas and Rome and their influence. To say the least the "Republic section" is all messed up. We need some clarification. I have new information but User:Snowspinner won't let me bring this back up for undelete. (I do grant that a little bit of the Classical definition is original but the rest is not.) I will not let Sparta be called anything but a republic! I will not let the British wikipedian modern republicans strip Sparta, (my heritage and roots) of her rightful name. She is a Classical republic and needs to be called such! At the least, where is the damage in having an external link?WHEELER 15:11, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

About RickK, me, and user blocking

[edit]
Note: Please read this carefully and thoroughly, as this is important.

RickK, one of the admins, blocked my former accounts "User:Hil Duff" and "User:Hil Duff star". He didn't give any reason why and totally ignored my comments on my talk page just because he thinks my user name would be something like imposting or vandalizing. I wanted to discuss things over with him, but he just deleted my account immediately without reason. I just want to be a happy Wikipedian here.

I AM NOT A VANDAL, and I won't be Hilary Duff, just Cool Cat886. I won't tell anybody that I am famous or a pop star. I just want to contribute in peace here, and YOU CAN BLOCK ME ONLY IF YOU SEE ME VANDALIZING OR ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING BAD, BECAUSE I DIDN'T. Would you support me and be my good friend, or should I just get blocked for eternity because I didn't do anything? Cool Cat886 07:19, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Democrat/Republican

On John F. Kennedy, you removed mention that he was "the last Democratic President elected from the North", stating in the edit summary "nixon was born in california - reagan was born in illinois, ghw was born in massachusetts; gw bush was born in connecticut". That seems unrelated, somehow. Nixon, Reagan, and both Bushes were Republicans, not Democrats. And California is not the North. • AI, you had added stub-notices to a great number of articles that didn't call for stub-notices. in the process of reverting over 20 articles to which you added stub-notices, it appears that i accidentally reverted two articles that you made more changes that just adding stub-notices. What do you know about Submarines?

[edit]

Since you have never served on a fast-attack submarine (as I have)...your dismissal of my post as vandalism is totalitarian and uninformed. There was nothing inaccurate in that post. If you don't believe that the US Navy takes their subs out for days at a time (at $300K per day each) just to clean them, you obviously have no right for your baseless censorship.

Until you have served on USS Topeka (SSN-754), you have no basis for your arbitrary deletions. You think I'm lying about Field Days or Spruce or impressing Congressmen? Pull your head out of your stupid fucking high school history teacher ass and acknowledge that you are not the god-know-all.

Vandalism rollbacks

[edit]

Could you be a bit more careful in your use of rollbacks? When you reverted User:69.104.173.122's vandalism to Submarine, you left the prior section blanking by User:68.71.200.83 in place, and the edit summary makes it look like all the vandalism had been cleaned up. Thanks. --Carnildo 01:50, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • Sorry, i didn't see the error. thanks! Kingturtle 07:29, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I rather hope the same thing happened at Rape; while the quote that User:63.25.167.59 kept trying to add really didn't add anything substantial and new to the article, it would have been a non-harmful change, unlike the changes just before that from User:70.241.117.179, who keeps trying to remove referenced information on the occurrence of false accusations. -- Antaeus Feldspar 00:30, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Prince William

[edit]

Thanks for fixing that change in style for the previous Princess of Wales at the beginning of the Prince William page. I hadn't noticed when that crept in. Other Words for Vomiting

[edit]

I noticed that you deleted the section in the vomiting article called "Other Words for Vomiting." Why? I'd like a good reason, and don't say "Wikipedia is not a thesaurus." That's not a reason. There are articles all over the site like that. You can write to me at User talk:Wolfj. (I'm not logged in right now.

The lengthy list of synonyms i removed was based on Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, which states that Wikipedia is "not an indiscriminate collection of items of information." Wikipedia is not a thesaurus, but Wiktionary is. Consider making your thesaurus entries onto Wiktionary, and then providing a link to it on the Vomiting article. Kingturtle 20:34, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The Pokemon Test

[edit]

I left a more elaborate response over at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Sunset High School (Portland) for you to read, but to illustrate what I mean, visit any of these dozen articles: Machop, Machop, Machoke, Machamp, Bellsprout, Tentacool, Tentacruel, Geodude, Graveler, Ponyta, Rapidash, Slowpoke, or Slowbro. There are dozens more just like those. My position is not that these should be deleted (they shouldn't), but that school articles are easily verifiable, expandable, useful and yes, totally encyclopedic. That last word, "encyclopedic", seems to be a huge matter of contention amongst deletionists— it's really too bad they can't find something more productive to focus their time and energy on. From the looks of it, one side believes that are encyclopedic, period, and another thinks that only a fraction of one percent are. Unfortunately I don't think a policy discussion will help matters, because it doesn't look like there is a whole lot of middle ground here. *sigh* —RaD Man (talk) 03:08, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Reverted my RV?"

[edit]

On Joseph McCarthy you undid my RV and returned the article to the vandalized state. The vandal not only added obscenity during his edits but also cut and pasted large parts of the article into individual sections. When my edit history showed me removing what looked like legitimate parts of the article, it's because I was undoing what the vandal did.

Please be more careful in the future and make sure that not only you are removing an act of vandalism (which you didn't), and that the version of the article that you are reverting to is not itself vandalized (which it was). 128.61.70.49 22:08, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

April 16

[edit]

Could you please explain your recent removal in the section Deaths on April 16? It just looks a bit odd, silently deleting items without explanation. Bye, Shinobu 06:47, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • I didn't silently delete them. I stated in my edit summary I was deleting them. Their Wikipedia articles are one sentence stubs, so I removed their names from the April 16 page. I was being bold. Kingturtle 15:33, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks, that is an explanation. I apologize for the term "silently", but an edit summary that says "deleted this and that" is not always that helpful. Apart from that the question wasn't meant as anything more than a question. Bye, Shinobu 17:18, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thany you

[edit]

Thank you very much for your offer to nominate me as a bureaucrat. I take it as a great compliment. For the time being, however, I don't think it is necessary. If there is in any way a shortage of bureaucrats I'm fine with a nomination, but I do not see that. Moreover I don't follow adminship issues too closely and I feel that while the title would be an honour I would end up doing little work to justify my new powers. - SimonP 15:37, Apr 27, 2005 (UTC)

bureaucratship

[edit]

I'm afraid I'd have to oppose Curps' nomination for bureaucratship. I was rather surprised by his use of admin powers in The Matrix, particularly unprotecting a protected article on an extremely dubious pretext, and his subsequent failure to concede error. If he disagreed with my protection of the article or feels I was at fault that's fine but he should have dealt with it differently. AndyL 15:43, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Kingturtle, I could probably be capable of carrying out the janitorial work of flipping the admin-flag-on switch once in a while, which bureaucratship seems to consist of in large part. But I'm not convinced that there is a shortage of bureaucrats, from the log it seems that this needs to be done only half a dozen times per week and most sysop promotions are handled by a single bureaucrat. Also, I've only been an admin for a few months now. So I don't feel that I would seek bureaucratship at this time. Thanks very much for the offer, however. -- Curps 18:24, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)
AndyL, as always, see you at Talk:The Matrix. I have described my objections to your actions there, at considerable length. -- Curps 18:24, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Bureaucrats

[edit]

Thanks for your message...to be honest, though, I don't really feel all that up to being a bureaucrat right now. I've had a lot on my mind and haven't been feeling like a terribly useful Wikicontributor of late. At another time in the future, I may very well be happy to accept the nomination, but right now I just don't feel up to the level of responsibility that it entails. Bearcat 22:32, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Schools

[edit]

*Isn't the precedent set by Sunset High School (Portland) to keep high schools? Kingturtle 07:17, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • I'm afraid not. I could cite precedent for both keeping and deleting schools, it's nowhere near as simple. However, we're working on a compromise (consisting of 'keep' some schools and 'merge' the rest). I'd be interested in your opinion thereon. Radiant_* 07:25, Apr 28, 2005 (UTC)
    • On this particular issue, I have no solid opinion. I just want to know what the policy is, so I can follow it. Kingturtle 07:28, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Nats

[edit]

Thanks for being the champion on this issue. The Expos and Nationals are the same franchise, had the Expos moved ten years ago, this debate would not be occuring. Wikipedia needs to be constitent and not have an exception when one is not warrented. However it seems that an interest group who perhaps are thinking with their hearts are probably going to win the day on this arguement, but I believe you are 100% correct on the issue.Smith03 15:52, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

You are confusing the team with the franchise. (explained on the vfd page) I'm not sure why you are so obsessed with mashing the pages together, anyway. What's to be gained by that? How does it make Wikipedia better? - Pioneer-12 19:46, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • All MLB, NFL and NBA team pages already have their old location and names redirecting to the current team name. This is not by accident. Kingturtle 19:48, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)
    • It happened for a reason, but that doesn't mean it happened for a good reason. Information wise, merging the Expos/Nationals articles is problematic. For example, that pretty infobox with the Expos stats would seem out of place on the Nationals page. In any case, rigid conformity is not something to be desired; flexibility is fundamental, and pluralism is important. Another reason not to merge is simply the will of the fans (yes, that is a significant reason).... If some people want a page, all other things being equal, Wikipedia is better off giving it to them; it just fosters goodwill. - Pioneer-12 20:29, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I don't see how those are useful examples. There's no discussion on either of those pages... so no idea what the Grizzlies and Hornets fans think of the move and having only one page for everything.
I can see that you are just going to go on and on forever about this. I'm still not sure why you are bothering. - Pioneer-12 08:48, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

bureaucracy

[edit]
Hi, I am considering nominating you to become a Bureaucrat. The role would involve giving administrator or bureaucrat access to other users following consensus on Wikipedia:Requests for adminship. Although there are currently 18 bureaucrats, it may be helpful to have a few more. If you would accept a nomination, please let me know. Kingturtle 04:27, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit]

Considering, firstly, that the work at July 20 I labored on for many weeks and which stood for months unremarked upon by any Wikipedian was largely removed by you without asking for the opinion of anyone else, and, secondly, that my attempts to address the issues regarding the file size raised on the talk page were summarily reverted by you within minutes, you will forgive me for failing to believe your invitation yesterday on Talk:July 20 to comment is a serious one. "Teflon Ron"

[edit]

I'm not going to get into a "war" with you about this, but 120 Google hits on a nickname of a recent president of the United States looks to me like evidence of non-notablity. Try Googling "Slick Willy" or "Tricky Dick". -- Jmabel | Talk 05:51, Apr 30, 2005 (UTC)

  • Although it is a less significant nickname, the name was popular in the 1980s. That the internet does not reflect that is not surprising - because the internet wasn't around then. Kingturtle 09:25, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Bureaucratship

[edit]

After thinking it over for a few days, I must regretfully decline your offer. It seems that we have all the bureaucrats we need right now, and they do the job quite speedily. Not to mention that the nomination would probably turn into a public witch trial ;). Perhaps in a few months. Thanks again, and warmest regards --Neutralitytalk 14:43, Apr 30, 2005 (UTC)

I appreciate your invitation to participate in the debate, and I'm sorry I displeased you with my decision. Since we live so close to each other, perhaps we could meet for a coffee or beer or something and have an in-person discussion on the issue. My RFA

[edit]

Thank you for your comments on my RFA. Although the voting period just ended with a 14-8-2 vote, I will admit once and for all that I used it more as an evaluation of myself. Being promoted would have been a plus. I was more interested in who voted, when they voted, who would change their votes and when, and the comments I would receive. Hopefully I will correct the main weakness that was raised by those who voted oppose -- that I was too eager to put articles on VFD. Also, I will try to interact more with those Wikipedians who did not vote at all.

As for next month, I don't know if I will nominate myself again. I might not think about it until somebody else puts me up there on RFA at a later date. Eventually, I see myself as an admin, especially as the number of articles and users continues to grow. Thanks again and good luck at improving this vast archive of free knowledge. Minor Edits

[edit]

I do usually annotate minor edits but some things are just so trivial it doesn't seem worth the effort. I couldn't find any reference to your quoted policy of never using the minor edit flag for day articles. Lots of people don't seem to know this either? --Rjstott 09:59, 4 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Wikipedia:Minor edit says that minor edit markers are for spelling corrections, formatting, and minor rearranging of text. it goes on to say "any real change, even if it is a single word, is a major edit." It isn't trivial to add a name to a list of deaths. It is helpful to other users if such an edit is not marked minor, and if the edit summary says something like "added Hippolyte Fizeau to list of deaths." Kingturtle 10:37, 4 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Satomi Mitarai

"I'd like to see more activity - more experience with the peer groups"

Hi, I'm just asking for a bit of clarification on "peer groups". Do you mean working on various cooperative projects, or participating in various community portal tasks? I actually don't visit the portal very often; the sheer number of sections and links are daunting (IMO the page needs a bit of reorganization). I do think I need to collaborate with others more, maybe help out with peer reviews and such. I tend to come up with big goals, and due to my independent nature, I don't ask for help, and can't always finish the projects I start.

So anyway, maybe you could suggest some areas of Wikipedia I might be able to help out with? --Poiuyt Man (talk) 06:36, 5 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I was just checking your user contributions to see if you have replied to my earlier (above) message, and noticed that you have been cleaning up the April 19 page, too. Thought I could answer the question you asked in this edit summary. In 1928, the 125th and final fascicle -- not volume nor edition -- of the Oxford English Dictionary was published. (It covered the W's.) I've restored the item with the correction. Also, don't worry about the item on the May 5 page. I've restored that as well. Cheers. -- PFHLai 08:29, 2005 May 6 (UTC)

Minor edits...

Sorry. I didn't really realise there were 'rules' for when to tick the 'minor' box. John Latham

[edit]

Hi, I was just wondering why you chose to move John Latham (Australian jurist) to John Latham (jurist). The reason I ask is that this has created some double redirects from John Latham (Australia) (the original location, and the one I prefer). --bainer 04:46, 14 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Disambiguation language should be as succinct as possible. (Australian jurist) is too much information....unless there was a (Canadian jurist) by the same name. John Latham (Australian) doesn't sound right...he is notable for being a Jurist, not for being Australian. Therefore, John Latham (jurist) is the most succinct and logical. Kingturtle 07:29, 14 May 2005 (UTC) P.S. i'll go and fix the double redirects. Kingturtle 07:29, 14 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Becoming an Admin

[edit]

It's funny that you should ask as I was thinking about this after reading about someone else who has been trying to become an admin. Personally, I don't think I have been active long enough. I have too much yet to learn. So, I don't think I am ready to even ask yet. Maybe in a few months after I get more experience. On the plus side, I'm trying different things so I am learning from my mistakes. Vegaswikian 05:33, 14 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

John Latham

[edit]

Could I suggest that Sir John Latham is much better known than the 19th century ornithologist of the same name, and that he ought to get the John Latham article, with the bird guy being relegated to John Latham (ornithologist)? Adam 10:01, 14 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not an admin. I was suggesting that you do it. Adam 10:20, 14 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • There are over 60 bird-related articles that link to John Latham. There are less than 10 articles that related to John Latham, the jurist. That might not be an indication of notoriety, but it *is* an indication of how much work is involved if the ornithology is moved. Each of those 60+ articles would have to be modified accordingly - and I don't have the energy tonight to get that done. So maybe I'll do it later this weekend when I have energy and feel refreshed. Kingturtle 10:30, 14 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. why do you continue to decline nomination to adminship? Kingturtle 10:32, 14 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Because I don't have the temperament for it. I get in far too many heated arguments with the many fools who infest this project. I doubt I could resist the temptation to block them or protect articles (particularly ones I have written) from them. Adam 10:46, 14 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

history articles on wikipedia?

[edit]

Hello,

I’m a historian working at the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University (http://chnm.gmu.edu/) and we are very interested in digital historical works, including people writing history on Wikipedia. We’d like to talk to people about their experiences working on articles in Wikipedia, in connection with a larger project on the history of the free and open source software movement. Would you be willing to talk with us about your involvement, either by phone, a/v chat, IM, or email? This could be as lengthy or brief a conversation as you wish.

Thanks for your consideration.

We teach our students to always check for the sources, especially with content from the www, and that means people and how these names are fitted for the task. If there is testimony from third, independent sources, the better. That was the reason the oceanographers set up independent info about their teacher, and gave all the sources, as a future ancor for refs. Space is not a problem on wikipedia and people load only what they want to know, other than on a paper version. I am willing, as retired professor, to give course scripts to the Wikiversity idea of Eric Moeller (user:eloquence) for future online e-teaching and e-research, and for that it would be necessary to have a credential page for every teacher, like the one oceanographers produced. The more real names wikipedia has the better will be the reputation. And I am shure there will come a time when not the clitoris page is hit no 1 of future wikipedia. keep up with your fine work, I admire your input, with or without name, people like you are the soul of wikipedia

You, in comparison, voted "SUPPORT" on Linuxbeak's RfA. Hes a great user, and i'm not making comparisons, but hes been around for three months - exactly the same as me. Thanks for the Useful Greeting

[edit]

It's nice to be welcomed - but it was useful, too. I didn't realize that user pages existed, I had just been jumping in on articles where I saw something to fix or contribute. I must be doing something right - I just had one of my articles (which I originally wrote) posted to the copyright problems list. Led to a bunch of hurt feelings and fury that turned into a rewrite of the article in question. Now it is more appropriate for an encyclopedia. Knowing that I'd been welcomed made it easier to deal with being pronounced a copyright violator by somebody who seems to make a hobby of deleting articles. Thanks!

I had a user flag a page I wrote Dive into Python as a copyright violation. From the template that comes up it's not exactly clear what the procedure is. I have:

  1. Added a note on the talk page certifying that I am the original author of the material and that I release it under the G??? license used here.
  2. Rewrote the article (I realized it was more informal & less encyclopedic) in the temp page Dive into Python/Temp
  3. Waited.

Now what? Does somebody have a responsibility for going through the copyright problems list and resolving / deleting pages? What's the process? Is there more that I'm supposed to do?

I think your new write-up looks great. I have copied into into the page. Kingturtle 03:10, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Today in History Pages

[edit]

The idea of the project I'm building was initially to create a historical resource of events and date (that is, when the project started in the pre-wikipedia days of 1995-1996). However, over time it evolved into becoming more of a meta resource of specific events. What do I mean by a specific event: first, it has to be verifiable (agreement on dates and existence of the event by most people... this I accomplish by Googling the date or event name and finding what other people say). Secondly, it has to have survived the passage of time (I set that at a decade: if it's still considered important after a decade it goes in... there is one exception to this rule as I believe most people will remember it after a decade: 9/11/2001). In terms of people's birthdays, I've initially gone by names that were included in some dictionaries I had (I think I started with the dictionary of american culturacy).

As I said in the previous paragraph, the idea pre-dates wikipedia. What I found is some of the data in wikipedia actually came from my own DB (even down to the wording) but some of the content I had in my own DB did not make it into Wikipedia. I was left with two choices then:

  • 1. look in wikipedia and remove the content that was infringing or
  • 2. find a way to merge my stuff more fully into wikipedia (hence I would only maintain a subset of wikipedia's content). I started merging some of the content but realized that it would take me forever.

So I figured it was better to go with option 3, link wikipedia to my DB and let other people take care of that merging. That's what I was starting to do yesterday but someone mentionned on my message page that this was no good. I had done cross-linking through June 30th before I read the message but upon reading it decided to stop and wait until some other wikipedian would ask me to continue to do so (or go ahead and link themselves). In the meantime, I figured I would start working on some other entries I can contribute to. --TNLNYC 12:51, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I totally agree with your comment there, despite my sympathy with the initative that underlies this list (namely presenting ADHD as a good thing rather than a handicap). This list is just way too speculative for a serious encyclopedia. Would it be appropriate for me to intiate VfD, or would that be seen by the community as heavy-handed? Thanks, PhilipR 14:55, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

(reply to self) I just left a talk message for one other person from the "What links here". If they don't have an opinion, I'm ready to VFD. Cheers, PhilipR 16:27, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

What Constitutes Vandalism?

[edit]

After moving some erroneous and self contradictory portions of the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program to the talk page, and documenting why they were erroneous or did not belong in a Wikipedia article, user:ReSearcher left this message:

To JohnElder: Please stop removing content from Wikipedia. It is considered vandalism. Your talk comments have added nonsense as well. If you want to experiment, please use the sandbox. If you continue to vandalize pages, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Thank you.

Did I engage in vandalism? Or merely a controversial edit - the entirety of the material was retained on the talk page, and my reasons for moving it were explained. That seems like the WP way to do things. I don't want to go about things the wrong way - so please let me know if I goofed. Sorry to be a "problem child." John Elder 21:13, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Deletionists cannot win in the VfD so this maybe a tactic to create a precedent for the speedy deletion of schools stub or school sub stubs! Please monitor this situation and the talk page at the Association of Inclusionist Wikipedians to discuss this issue.

Im my opinion SPEEDY deletion of school stubs and school substubs is inapproperate! --ShaunMacPherson 07:04, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

If you could could you spread the word to interested parties, I believe you are more familiar with the parties that wish to see school articles preserved better than I :). --ShaunMacPherson 07:04, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

belated thanks

[edit]

Thanks for supporting my RFA nearly a month ago. Unfortunately a sad event occurred at that time in my family, and I have not been able to participate in Wikipedia as much as I would like. I hope to get back to active contribution soon. Thanks again, and I hope you're having a great vacation! Cheers, FreplySpang (talk) 01:23, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit]

It's nice to know you; I received your Welcome Message in June 3th. I found a "copyright violation" long time ago, that is, a German tennis player Tommy Haas. The First Edition includes copyright violation from ATP Official site, but someone added {{cleanup}}, not {{copyvio|url=http://www.atptennis.com/en/players/playerprofiles/Highlights/default.asp?playernumber=H355}}. I noticed it in January 2005, but I wasn't accustomed to Wikipedia Project then. I didn't know what {{cleanup}} meant. After 9 revision histories, This Edition removed copied sentences. What shall we do in this case? We can't leave such problematic histories, the previous nine. --Hhst 07:06, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Howdy! I'm contacting you because your name is listed as a participant in Wikipedia:WikiProject Baseball players. The project seems to be dormant, but I'm interested in starting it up again. I've worked on a new infobox template (see it in action here) and have many ideas for increasing Wikipedia's coverage of MLB players. If you're interested, please leave a note at the project's talk page. Thanks! AиDя01DTALKEMAIL 22:22, July 22, 2005 (UTC)

Signing

[edit]

Dear Kingturtle, I ask this question to you because I couldn't find an easy answer elsewhere: I edited an article and saved it while I wasn't logged on, so the changes are not signed by my username but rather from my IP. Can this be changed somehow so I can sign my entry?--Spryom 20:53, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Afghanistan provinces

[edit]

I got into a little tiff with Tobias Conradi over finally renaming the provinces of Afghanistan back to the "X province" format, from the "X Province" format he put them in some time ago. I have a question for you, since you seem to know something of Afghanistan: Can you state that "X province" is more accurate than "X Province?" (I noticed, on User talk:Jeltz, that every one of the google results you gave were to news sites, which may not know the standard. Or maybe they do! I don't know.) And, secondly, is there any reason not to use simply "X"? That is, if we put the articles at Paktia, Panjshir, Kandahar (province), etc? I know you're on vacation, so I wait for your reply. Thanks! :) --Golbez 15:51, August 10, 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard

[edit]

I have created a new project page at Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard, and Secretondon suggested that I tell my fellow bureaucrats about it. It's designed as a forum where users with bureaucrat rights can discuss difficult situations, either beforehand (for advice about what to do) or after taking action (for review and feedback). It's similar to another page I created, which is starting to catch on (e.g., Jimbo used it this August): Wikipedia:account suspensions, which is not for 3RR or simple vandalism but for close calls and disputed blocks.

Please take a look at these new project pages and give some feedback. Good idea? Bad? Needs improvement? --Uncle Ed 12:23, September 1, 2005 (UTC)

Kingturtle, you asked me to redothat on IRC and later you revert me for doing so. You basicaly made me waiste several hours. Can you PLEASE tell me what the heck is going on? Please also notify me on my talk page. --Cool Cat Talk 20:52, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Also you removed "Terrebonne" stats from Lousiana. entry. --Cool Cat Talk 21:02, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I am not pissed ...much... but I thought it look better, I just want to improve meself. --Cool Cat Talk 21:02, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

coolcat, my specific request in IRC was for someone to change the "Totals" row from 4 columns to 5 columns. this was something i wasn't able to figure out within the confines of the chart that existed. i did not ask for a total overhaul of the chart.
the States and their totals should appear in the first columns, and then subsets should appear in further columns. i am sorry for the amount of time you spent redoing the chart. can i reimburse you by doing a wikipedia task for you? :)
Kingturtle 21:09, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. I will add Terrebonne stats right now. thanks for catching that ommission.
Not just that but the "missing" are missing as well. See katrina toll talk page for a few issues I have with current template. --Cool Cat Talk 21:23, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I refuse to let those hours to waiste ;). Lets see what we can coe up with. Ok? --Cool Cat Talk 21:43, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I was the one who added the "Missing" column. I decided to remove the "Missing" column because I felt the States and the States Totals columns should be separated from one to two - and if I didn't remove the "Missing" column, the chart would get too wide.
I am happy to do a project for you. i owe you that time! Kingturtle 21:49, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion rampage

[edit]

Just a heads-up, but it seems that Jimbo Wales has decided to tighten up image tagging requirements, and has ordered immediate expunging of unsourced images. Some admins have thrown themselves into this hastily (User:Zscout370 for example), who aren't bothering to notify the uploaders or even remove the links. I bring this to your attention because Image:Benzodiazepine.jpg -- still in Benzodiazepine -- was deleted a few days ago. Better check your images for proper tags. --Calton | Talk 08:01, 23 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use outside of article space

[edit]

Hi. I see that your user page includes one or more "fair use" images (e.g. Image:Marine-raiders.jpg). You may not be aware that the fair use exception requires a separate justification for each use of an image, and it difficult to make a fair use argument outside of the main article namespace. Please see Wikipedia:Fair_use#Images for details. Cheers, Bovlb 07:49, 24 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I am confused. Are you saying that I can't show that picture on my userpage because I can't justify it's use there? Kingturtle 18:24, 24 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid that's correct. Wikipedia:Fair_use#Images gives the details, but essentially fair use is out for user pages. Bovlb 15:38, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Are there any other images on my user page that need to be removed? Kingturtle 18:21, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't look, and I'm supposed to be on WikiVacation this week. Sorry. I'm thinking of scripting the detection of fair use images outside article space. Bovlb 22:13, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Please do not script such an activity. That will rub people the wrong way. The tactful and kind way is to tell individuals of their image violations, and have them remove said images. Kingturtle 23:06, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Just to clarify, I was thinking of writing a script that would produce a list (e.g. sorted by page) for more convenient human action. Such a list would have answered your question. I am not proposing to script any removal of images or image links. I have been experimenting recently with finding violations of this type manually and then contacting users, with mixed results. By the way, I think (IANAL) that a link to an image ([:Image:…]), as opposed to an inline image, would not violate copyright. Have a look at what I've done with my (modest)upload gallery. (Hmm. I wonder if we could make the gallery extension de-inline "fair use" images.) Bovlb 14:10, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

ITN

[edit]

Someone was just able to vandalise the main page beacuse you included an image on the ITN template that was not protected. If you don't know a commons admin you must upload the image to wikiepdia, tag in with {{c-uploaded}}, and protect it before you can add it to the main page.--nixie 00:35, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello kingturtle

[edit]

It seems to me that you are black, or know about black people, so I thought I' ask you:I do not fully understand the term, nigger. If a person is born white, but eventually goes black maybe from a tan, would he/she be allowed to say it? What if he was muslim? Note: I am not being racist, I really want to know.

Years in baseball

[edit]

Can you have a look at Category:Baseball, and try and figure out why 9 (and only 9) of the "year in baseball" articles are showing up there? There's no real reason for them to be in the main category as well as the sub-cats. I can't for the life of me figure out what's causing it. 1966 in baseball shows up there, for example, but 1996 in baseball doesn't, and I can't find any difference in the formatting of the pages. Sylvia Wright and Mondegreens

[edit]

Hi. Back in May, someone I "cyber-know" added some material to Mondegreen, which you reverted a week later. She mentioned it recently, and I'm curious about what was wrong with it. Also, I think it's too bad to discourage an occasional Wikipedian like her, since she's very scrupulous about getting her facts straight and substantiating them. Anyway, I added the material back with some edits of my own and put something on the Talk page, so you can answer here or there or on my talk page. Thanks. —JerryFriedman 21:41, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. WikiThanks.
I would like to express my thanks to all the people who took part in my (failed) RfA voting. I was both surprised and delighted about the amount of support votes and all the kind words! I was also surprised by the amount of people who stated clearly that they do care, be it by voting in for or against my candidacy. That's what Wiki community is about and I'm really pleased to see that it works.
As my RfA voting failed with 71% support, I don't plan to reapply for adminship any more. However, I hope I might still be of some help to the community. Cheers! Halibutt 05:10, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Important AfD

[edit]

I am contacting editors applies NPOV and NOR standards rigidly for their input on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of modern day dictators, where a consensus has yet to be established. I think this AfD is particularly important because it has been bringing to light some fundamental differences in interpretations of content policies among editors. If you have time, please take a look at the page and add your input. Best regards. 172 07:56, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Gulf War Syndrome's Principi quote in light of uranium as a neurotoxin

[edit]

Dear Kingturtle, why did you do this? The 2005 Nebraska research which you reverted away is rock-solid, and none of the other substances which I had removed mention of are teratogenic. I can get more sources about the neurotoxicity of uranium if you like; please let me know. 71.141.165.166 19:19, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I did not revert away. I re-added "United States Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi's panel found that more recent studies suggest the veterans' illnesses are neurological and apparently are linked to exposure to neurotoxins such as the nerve gas sarin, the anti-nerve gas drug pyridostigmine bromide, and pesticides that affect the nervous system. Research studies conducted since the war have consistently indicated that psychiatric illness, combat experience or other deployment-related stressors do not explain Gulf War veterans illnesses in the large majority of ill veterans," the review committee said."
Please explain to be better what needs to be done and I will help. Kingturtle 21:31, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, well, I think the link to the 2005 Nebraska research should be added back, because as far as I know it was the first peer-reviewed medical publication proving that uranium is a neurotoxin. That means that uranium inhalation exposure can explain the observed birth defects, immune system problems, AND the behavioral problems, whereas from 2002-2004 it could only explain the first two. Does that make sense? 71.141.121.198 21:55, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Afganistan

[edit]

I noticed you have made a lot of contributions to the Afgan articles. I am curently working on some texts over at Wikisource in particular some of Kipling's poetry with references to Afganistan under the Birtish Empire. For example I would like to link to Michni and Mooltan which I believe are places in Afganistan or the Northwest Province. Perhaps they are too small of towns to merit an article but maybe they are no longer called by the same names the Britsh used. The other question I had was if you knew if the Hurrum Hills are along the Durand line? Any help you could give me would be appreciated.--BirgitteSB 20:48, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
