NOC

[edit]

The Tories aren't actually part of the executive - however the Council is under No Overall Control. The Executive is entirely Lib Dem. Secretlondon 15:17, Feb 7, 2004 (UTC)

Demographics

[edit]

The demographics are contradictory. It looks like someone has merged black african and black caribbean and called them both afro-caribbean. They are separate communities and shouldn't be merged. Also calling the town hall address "admin hq" looks strange. Secretlondon 03:24, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Further to the above, I understood that "afro-cribbean" is the official term for black people in Britain (equivalent to afro-American). While culurally different the two are usually counted together.
Politics
Prior to the 1990 elections, there was a small group of dissidents from the Labour Party under the title Independent Labour Group, led by Anthony (Tony) Goss who had been suspended from the party about 1988 for irregularities in the Peckham branch social fund. Six (or seven?) other councillors resigned the party to support him (including his wife Anne Goss). One resigned his seat to force a by-election in the Friary Ward where Goss lived in the Friary Estate, contested by Greg Staunton, the Chair of Ledbury Estate tenants committee as Independent Labour/Tenants Association against the successful Labour candidate, who was dismissed by Goss as a "Dulwich Yuppie". Goss published a fortnightly newsletter, The Lion, as a rival to the official City Council monthly "Sparrow". The ILG remained a minor irritant to the Labour Party, until the 1990 elections when Goss, his wife and one other contested the Friary Ward and lost to the official Labour candidates.

The demographics details should probably be moved from the infobox to it's own section and expanded. The borough has been strongly culturally enriched, and should be included in the history. --Inops (talk) 20:30, 3 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Needs a new more informative map

[edit]

While the map presented here may provide some kind of information to those who are familiar with Greater London's position in England, for the rest of us, the map illustration as it is presented here, does nothing to assist in this borough's formation in history and geographical membership. From the looks of the map, Southwark appears to have been nearly at the epicenter of London and its formation, or is that a misleading conclusion from the current depiction? Sport and Leisure - location of The Den

[edit]

The article lists Millwall as a football club based in the borough. Their stadium is in Lewisham - the article for The Den makes several mentions of Lewisham council. I'm not sure if there is some sort of historical president that has lead to it being listed here so I'm not going to remove whilst I await someone more knowledgeable to weigh in.
