Wondering how to edit this U.S. County Entry?

""Pronunciation""

[edit]

I was driving thru last week and heard on the car radio the place pronounced as 'Del Nort' rather than as in Spanish. Does someone know the local or official pronunciation? Benjamin Trovato (talk) 02:57, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That is indeed the local pronunciation. --Satyricrash (talk) 01:26, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear friends, I have a concern about the common misconception related to Del Norte's pronunciation. The article seems to assert that the Spanish pronunciation is the standard we should be pointing to. However, I think that since the area was founded by Portuguese settlers, the pronunciation is derived from Portuguese. I wish to strike the mentioning of Spanish, or connect the addition made by biblioxica about Portuguese — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikisbaldivia (talkcontribs) 20:31, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your interest in improving Wikipedia. A reliable source is needed regarding the source of the pronunciation. Asserting this through original research will not work. Cheers, Fettlemap (talk) 21:00, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The two-syllable pronunciation of Del Norte is not derived from Portuguese; I'm from Del Norte and remember hearing people make this claim growing up, but I think it is just a local legend. In Portuguese the name would be "Do Norte" and "Norte" would be pronounced as something like "nor-chee" not "nort" (cf. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/norte#Portuguese). The contraction "del" (de + el) seems evidence that it's simply an anglicization of a Spanish place name (see https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/del#Spanish )--the kind you see all over California in "Los Angeles" as /lɔːs ˈændʒələs/ or "Los Feliz" as /lɔːs ˈfiːlɪz/. A similar thing seems to be happening to a town in Colorado also called Del Norte: https://www.9news.com/article/news/local/next/what-do-you-say-how-do-you-pronounce-del-norte/73-403062186. Over-View section

[edit]

This section is definitely not per Wiki format of article development. Generalizations need supportive citation in specific headings related to County articles and all of the information either needs to be moved to proper wiki headings or removed. It is important to note that Wikipedia is NOT the place for travel guide type writing. It is an encyclopedia. Please discuss. Within several days these changes will need to start to occur.
