In rail transport, a train is a vehicle or (more frequently) a string of vehicles capable of being moved along a continuous line of rails or other guideway for the purpose of conveying freight or passengers between points on a predetermined route. The train may be hauled or propelled by one or more vehicles designed exclusively for that purpose (locomotives) or may be driven by a number of motors incorporated in all or several of the vehicles (multiple units).

As of 2018, there are approximately 1,052,000 kilometres (654,000 mi) of railway track in use worldwide. (World Bank (via Archive.org))

SR Class Q, Number 541 in use at the Bluebell Railway in 2007

The SR Class Q, also regarded as the Q Class, is a type of 0-6-0 steam locomotive constructed prior to the Second World War for use in the United Kingdom. The class was designed by Richard Maunsell to Victorian principles of locomotive design, and were for use on medium-distance freight turns to be found on the Southern Railway network. Twenty locomotives were built under the auspices of Maunsell's successor, Oliver Bulleid, in 1938, though they were superseded by Bulleid's newer Q1 Class design. Modified by Bulleid to improve performance, the Q Class locomotives were utilised throughout the Southern system until their withdrawal in 1965. Only one has survived into preservation; it is displayed on the Bluebell Railway.

Coln Valley and Halstead Railway 2-2-2WT at Halstead engine shed

A mid-Victorian era photograph showing a Colne Valley and Halstead Railway 2-2-2WT at Halstead engine shed.

This Sharp built engine was the only single used on the line. Originally constructed in 1849 for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway, the locomotive was involved in an accident close to New Cross in 1855. After being rebuilt it was sold to the Colne Valley and Halstead Railway. This photo shows the driver involved in the crash (Mr C. Taunton) who was transferred to Halstead shed along with the locomotive. Today, much of the Colne Valley and Halstead Railway forms the basis of the Colne Valley Railway.
