Files for discussion (FfD) is for listing images and other media files which may be unneeded or have either free content or non-free content usage concerns. Files that have been listed here for more than 7 days are eligible for either deletion or removal from pages if either a consensus to do so has been reached or the nominator specifically requests deletion or removal and no objections are raised. To quote the non-free content criteria, "it is the duty of users seeking to include or retain content to provide a valid rationale; those seeking to remove or delete it are not required to show that one cannot be created." For undeletion requests, first contact the administrator who deleted the file. If you are unable to resolve the issue with that administrator, the matter should be brought to deletion review.

What not to list here

For concerns not listed below, if a deletion is uncontroversial, do not use this process. Instead tag a file with {{subst:prod}}. However, if the template is removed, please do not reinsert it; list the file for deletion then.
For speedy deletion candidates as well, do not use this page; instead use one of the speedy deletion templates. See the criteria for speedy deletion. These are: duplicates (where both files are on Wikipedia), thumbnails, broken files, non-existent files, non-commercial, "by permission" files and files which are not an image, sound file or video clip and have no encyclopedic use.
Files that have no source, have an unknown copyright, are unused or replaceable non-free, or are non-free without rationale can be marked so that they will be deleted after a week, and should not be listed on this page. Add one of the following to the file page:
1. {{subst:nsd}} if a file has no source indicated.
2. {{subst:nld}} if a file has a source but no licensing information.
3. {{subst:orfud}} if a file has a non-free copyright template but isn't used in any articles.
4. {{subst:rfu}} if a file has a non-free copyright template but could be replaced by a free file.
5. {{subst:dfu|reason}} if a file has a non-free copyright template but the rationale isn't sufficient or is disputed.
6. {{subst:nrd}} if a file has no non-free use rationale.
Redundant or duplicate files do not have to be listed here. Please use
1. {{db-f1|Full name of file excluding the "File:" prefix}} for speedy deletion if the other file is on Wikipedia, not on Commons
2. {{now commons|File:NEW FILENAME}} if the file now exists on Commons, or {{now commons}} for files with the same name on Commons. (Don't nominate protected images, they are usually locally uploaded and protected since they are used in an interface message or in a highly used template, thus they are high-risk.)
For blatant copyright infringements, use speedy deletion by tagging the file {{db-f9}}.
If a file is listed as public domain or under a free license but lacks verification of this (either by a VRT ticket number or a notice on the source website), tag it as {{subst:npd}}.
Files that are hosted on Wikimedia Commons cannot be deleted via this process. Please use the Commons deletion page instead.
Description pages with no local file, even though they are in the file namespace, should not be listed here.
1. Redirects should be treated as in any other namespace: if no speedy deletion criteria apply, they should be listed at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion.
2. Local description pages with no associated file are speedy-deletable under criterion G8; use {{db-imagepage}}.
3. Local description pages for files hosted on Commons are usually speedy-deletable under criterion F2 if there is no content relevant to Wikipedia; use {{db-fpcfail}}.
4. Any other local description pages for files hosted on Commons should be listed at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion.
If a file is appropriately licensed and could be usable elsewhere, consider copying it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of listing it for deletion. Once copied to the Commons, it is eligible for speedy deletion per criterion 8 for files.
If you are the uploader of the image, tag it with {{db-author}}.

Instructions for listing files for discussion

Use Twinkle. If you can't, follow these steps to do manually:

1	Edit the file page. Add `{{Ffd\|log=2024 July 22}}` to the file page.
2	Create its FfD subsection. Follow this edit link and list the file using `{{subst:Ffd2\|File_name.ext\|uploader=\|reason=}}` `~~~~` Leave the subject heading blank. If the file has been replaced by another file, name the file that replaced it in your reason for deletion. Refer below for a list of other common reasons. For listing additional files with the same reason, edit the first file section and use `{{subst:Ffd2a\|File_name.ext\|Uploader=}}` for each additional file. You may use this tool to quickly generate Ffd2a listings. Also, add `{{Ffd\|log=2024 July 22}}` to the top of the file page of each file other than the first one nominated.
3	Give due notice. Inform the uploader by adding a message to their talk page using `{{subst:Ffd notice\|File_name.ext}}` Remember to replace "File_name.ext" with the name of the image or media For multiple images by the same user, use `{{subst:Ffd notice multi\|First_file.ext\|Second_file.ext\|Third_file.ext}}` `~~~~` (can handle up to 26) If the image is in use, also consider adding `{{FFDC\|File_name.ext\|log=2024 July 22}}` to the caption(s), or adding a notice to the article talk pages. Consider also notifying relevant WikiProjects of the discussion.

State the reasons why the file should be deleted, removed, or altered. Also, state what specific action should be taken, preferably in bold text; this allows discussion participants and closers to better understand the purpose of the nomination. Some examples of nomination statements include:

Delete. Orphaned with no foreseeable encyclopedic usage.
Delete. Replaced by File:FILE2.
Free (public domain) file may actually be eligible for copyright in the United States. This photograph was actually first published in 1931, not 1925.
Remove from ARTICLE1 and ARTICLE2. The file only meets WP:NFCC#8 with its use in ARTICLE3.
Non-free file may actually be free. This logo does not seem to meet the threshold of originality to be eligible for copyright in the United States and should actually be tagged free using {{PD-logo}}.

Examples of what files you may request for discussion, deletion or change here:

Obsolete – The file has been replaced by a better version.
Orphan – The file is not used on any pages in Wikipedia.
Unencyclopedic – The file doesn't seem likely to be useful in any Wikimedia project.
Low quality – The file is of an extremely low resolution, distorted, or has other physical image quality concerns.
Copyright violation – The file might be used in violation of copyright.
Possibly unfree – The file is claimed as a freely licensed content, but may actually be protected by copyright in either the United States or its country of origin.
NFCC violation – The file is used under a claim of fair use but does not meet the requirements.
Disputed copyright status – There is a disagreement between editors over the copyright status of a file. This includes, but is not limited to disputes about whether a file is: too simple for fair use, using the correct license tags, or accurately described by its description page.
Wrongly claimed as own – The file is under a self license, but the information on the file description pages suggests otherwise.

These are not the only "valid" reasons to discuss a file. Any properly explained reason can be used. The above list comprises the most common and uncontroversial ones.

If you remove a file from an article, list the article from which you removed it so there can be community review of whether the file should be deleted. This is necessary because file pages do not remember the articles on which the file were previously used.

In responding to the deletion nomination, consider adding your post in the format

where "Delete", "Keep", "Comment", or something else may replace "View". In posting their reasoning, many editors use abbreviations and cite to the following:

Remember that polling is not a substitute for discussion. Wikipedia's primary method of determining consensus is through editing and discussion, not voting. Although editors occasionally use straw polls in an attempt to test for consensus, polls or surveys sometimes impede rather than assist discussion. They should be used with caution, and are no more binding than any other consensus decision.

Non-free screenshot being used in a WP:DECORATIVE manner in Henry Calvin#Career; the file is also being used in Zorro (1957 TV series)#Main. This file was uploaded in 2007 and was being used as the main infobox image for the "Henry Cavin" article, but was replaced by the Commons image File:Henry Calvin (1946-1947).jpg after the non-free was removed by Explicit with this edit in January 2023. Explicit also removed the non-free use rationale for the "Calvin" article with this edit. The file was, however, re-added by ProudLondoner with this edit in January 2024, without giving a reason and without adding a non-free use rationale for the use to the file's page. The use in the "Calvin" article, therefore, fails WP:NFCC#10c, and the file could be removed for that reason alone. After consulting with Explicit about this at User talk:Explicit#File:Hcalvinasgarcia.jpg, it was recommended that the file's uses be discussed here at FFD because of concerns that the non-free use in the "Zorro" article might also not be policy compliant. I don't think there's any justification for the non-free use in the "Calvin" article, but the use in the "Zorro" article seems borderline to me given that the character "Sergeant Demetrio Lopez Garcia" is listed as a main character. Since no stand-alone article exists about the "Garcia" character, I guess it could be argued the argument for non-free use in the article about the TV show is a bit weak; perhaps a non-free full-cast photo like this, or a publicity still like the ones shown here could be found that is {{PD-US-no notice}} or {{PD-US-not renewed}} given that the show ran from 1957 to 1959 which would make any non-free image unnecessary. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:45, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the Vancouver logo is very simple in design. Although Canada's copyright law is inherited from the British Empire, Canadian judicial precedents are very different from those in the UK or Australia. The minimum copyright protection in Canada is probably greater than that in the United States, and Vancouver's city logo is unlikely to meet the minimum copyright protection in the United States.

Please replace the original fair use tag with {{PD-textlogo}} and move it to wikicommons.

Comment There's no clear source for the file. This is the best source I could find, but there's no indication whether it's the image or just the underlying symbol that would have fallen out of copyright. A free version of the logo using only letters does exist, and we can use it as an equivalent of this non-free logo in any part of Wikipedia. But in fact, the letters are not the main part of this logo, unlike this circle with a star. And we cannot replace this circle and its contents with a free version. I will draw an analogy with the logo of the Conservative Party (UK), which is similar both in color and in the structure of the logo. There we can also remove the tree from the logo and get a free logo consisting only of text, but this is not an excuse for removing the logo with a tree, which is the main part of the party logo. I relicensed this as {{Cc-by-3.0}} but Graeme Bartlett reverted my relicensing to the original licensing, {{Photo_of_art|{{Cc-by-3.0|FU FUN|dw=yes}}||{{Non-free 2D art|image has rationale=yes}}}} because they thought that there is enough on the sign to be copyrightable. The file is located on Commons but it has not been deleted because uploader added a {{Keep local}}. The file is not used on the front page or heavily used so that is not the reason for the Keep local.

According to a message from 2008 the reason is that some files once were deleted on Commons. Especially if they were related to sensitive topics like animal rights. Therefore uploader liked to have files local to be able to monitor them.

Sadly the uploader User:SlimVirgin is deceased since more than three years ago so she can no longer monitor the files even if they are local. So the reason for the keep local is no longer there. I noticed that user did not object to a PROD of file 14 January 2021 so perhaps se did no longer worry so much.

Files with a keep local can’t be deleted per CSD F8 but should be nominated for deletion. Per other discussions like files uploaded by Spinningspark in Wikipedia:Files_for_discussion/2024_April_24#File:4-cube_4^4.png and the other discussions mentioned there, files can be deleted even if it has a keep local if uploader is no longer active and there is no other reason to keep it.

SlimVirgin have uploaded more files with a keep local and many of those are most likely on Commons so just like with the files uploaded by Spinningspark I suggest that the files can be deleted via a PROD so users can protest if they have good reasons to keep a file. Honestly though, do whatever you want. If removing a sample of a song that has been up for twelve years is your definition of improving Wikipedia, so be it. This is the sort of nonsense that makes people leave this place and not want to contribute. I wish people put as much effort into improving articles as they do tearing them down. Whilst use of this image in The Phryges article is acceptable (as it is an article about the logo in question), the use of this image is not acceptable on 2024 Summer Olympics or 2024 Summer Paralympics, and so it should be removed from both of these articles. On the Olympics/Paralympics articles, it fails WP:NFCC#8, since there is only minimal text about them in each of these articles, and also the event logos do a better job of explaining the event via logo than the mascots do. Also fails WP:NFCC#3- minimal number of non-free items, as the Olympics/Paralympics logos suffice. I note that previous logos are being used in previous Olympics/Paralympics articles, which I also think is wrong for the same reason- this is not an argument to keep these on all 3 articles, as per WP:OSE. The original source for this image is c:File:Alan MacMasters circa end of 19th century.jpg (now deleted). This image is currently tagged as {{Wikipedia-screenshot}}, but with a non-free use rationale. If the original Commons image was freely licensed, we can remove the non-free use rationale (and maybe transfer back to Commons with correct source/description info?). Keep: Per the Commons deletion discussion, this image appears to have been uploaded to Commons as a PD image with a hoax description of its source. Since it wasn't uploaded there under a CC license, unless it's been released elsewhere under such a license, I think we have to assume this is still under copyright and upload it here with a non-free use rationale. I think this image meets NFCCP. As for the screenshot tag, that's incorrect since it was taken from another website. I uploaded this ten years ago and do not remember the details. I do not know why I didn't use template:Non-free use rationale book cover. Maybe it wasn't available at that time? My understanding is that since this is the first edition of a book (in this case a specific translation of the Bible) the use of the cover for identification is valid for free use. While there are many modern English versions of the Bible, the name "Modern English Version" refers to a specific translation which was released in 2014, and this image is a low resolution image of that first edition's cover.

Does this image even meet the threshold of originality for copyright? It may be possible to move this to Commons if not. Grayfell (talk) 18:49, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The cat is alive, so it falls WP:NFCC#1. Additionally, the rationale doesn't justify the use: "To illustrate Taylor Swift's usage of her pets in her creative works" is incorrect since the file is illustrating the cat itself. "Necessary in order to differentiate from the television character of the same name." is not a purpose of a image, the articles' titles already fulfill that purpose. Flor Contemplacion photos

"File:Flor Contemlacion" is essentially a cropped and enlarged version of "File:Flor Contemplacion after arrest.jpg" and two non-free files providing essentially the same encylopedic information to readers aren't need per WP:NFCC#3a. The cropped version is currently being used for primary identification purposes in the main infobox of Flor Contemplacion while the uncropped "after arrest" version is being used in Flor Contemplacion#Background to arrest. The cropped file does appears to have been upload prior to the uncropped version, but the uncropped version does perhaps provide more context and is a true representation of the photo that was taken. For that reason, I think that the uncropped versoin is probably the one that should be kept except it source url doesn't appear to be working to allow for verification of WP:NFCC#4.
