If you are going to disambiguate an acronym that is well-known to mean one thing, 99% of the time, you had better be prepared to fix all the links after you change it from a redirect! RedWolf 17:57, Apr 2, 2004 (UTC)

Sorry... but not all the world come from Canada... and really, there are much more interesting things to look for under CBC. Also UBS should directly link to the bank but it is still an acronym and the users should be allowed to make a choice. And, moreover, not all the users know how disambiguation pages work. So, start correcting out the pages that link directly (abusively) to firms/brands. Thanks. Quattrop 16:57, Dec 7, 2005 (UTC)

I have moved CBC (disambiguation) to CBC instead of CBC redirecting to Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Quarl (talk) 2006-10-17 18:59Z

I hope, then, that you're planning to do something about the several hundred articles that link to CBC with the intended meaning of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation; the "what links here" page in fact doesn't appear to list a single solitary link where "CBC" was linked to with any other meaning in mind. Bearcat 04:36, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've already fixed a lot, but User:SNIyer12 moved it back without discussion -- not cool. Quarl (talk) 2006-10-20 07:10Z
Agreed; that was a bad move on his part. And in hindsight, my tone above comes across, at least to me, as more sarcastic than I intended. I have no objection to making CBC the dab page instead of a direct link to the Canadian meaning; I've just seen far too many cases where somebody moved a page and then did nothing about the existing links. So my apologies to you. Bearcat 18:04, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No offense taken. :) Quarl (talk) 2006-10-23 22:33Z

I feel that the most common use of CBC is Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. When people say CBC, most people refer to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. -- SNIyer12, (talk), 23:01, 21 Oct, 2006 (UTC)

True only if the people are Canadians. False if the people are physicians. - Nunh-huh 23:03, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, CBC to me means Cipher block chaining, and based on many links I've fixed, to many others means Complete blood count. Also, most links to CBC really should be to CBC Television or CBC Radio, not Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (I've fixed a lot of them). The first Google hit for "CBC" is for Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, but 5 of the top 10 Google are for other uses, so CBC does not overwhelmingly refer to Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (compare Google hits for "BBC", all of which are for British Broadcasting Corporation). Quarl (talk) 2006-10-21 08:22Z
As somebody who doesn't normally use any of these popular meanings of "CBC", I'd certainly "vote" for CBC going to the disambiguation page, not the Canadian entity. I tend to believe most ambiguous pages should – even if the primary meaning is extremely obvious. The idea being to help Wikipedia readers find the information they want, whatever it may be. For those looking for the broadcaster, one more mouse click won't kill them. – Kieran T (talk | contribs) 12:23, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Only in Canada, SNIyer12; not so much in the United States, England, South Africa, Australia or any of the many other English-speaking countries in the world. And as Quarl correctly noted, many of the links that point to CBC right now should more accurately be pointed directly to CBC Radio or CBC Television. Bearcat 18:04, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Bearcat, are Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland part of "England", or are they some of "the many other English-speaking countries in the world"? I think you'll find that, like England, they're part of the UK. I'm from the UK, and I don't know of anything using the CBC acronym. Quiensabe 02:56, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Are you claiming that you would recognize "CBC" as meaning Canadian Broadcasting Corporation? Because unless you are, you might have to review the context of my comment, since your statement doesn't actually contradict it. Bearcat 07:49, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've finished disambiguating all mainspace pages pointing to CBC to the appropriate article, and since there seems to be general consensus that CBC should be a disambiguation page rather than a redirect, I will now make that change (again). Quarl (talk) 2006-10-31 07:18Z

Eh? No general consensus means two objections now? I've never hear CBC refer to anything other than the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. -Royalguard11(Talk·Desk·Review Me!) 01:21, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Searches tell me the same thing. MSN, Yahoo, Ask.com, Metacrawler, Google. -Royalguard11(Talk·Desk·Review Me!) 21:33, 9 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You've never gone to a lab to get a complete blood count taken for your doctor? Really? Bearcat 05:34, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CBC employee says keep the disam page

[edit]

I work at the CBC (the Canadian one) I think the "CBC" article on Wikipedia works better as a disambiguation page. I search blogs for mentions of CBC and a lot of the time they're talking about the Congressional Black Caucus.

We aren't the only CBC out there. I think WP should reflect that. JohnnyB 13:48, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Note

[edit]

All editors are reminded that there are very few circumstances where it's necessary or appropriate to directly use CBC as a link intended for the Canadian broadcaster. Link to CBC Television, CBC Radio One, CBC Radio 2, etc., as appropriate; do not use plain undisambiguated CBC as a substitute for linking to the actual service under discussion. The Nature of Things airs on CBC Television. Quirks and Quarks airs on CBC Radio One. Neither show airs on the whole Canadian Broadcasting Corporation — that would be a fascinating and utterly unprecedented accomplishment, which would entail airing on five TV networks and seven radio services simultaneously.

Long story short, we don't need this link as a redirect to Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, because 95 per cent of the articles using it for that purpose are individual-network topics which shouldn't be linking to the corporation's overview article in the first place. Move

[edit]

I moved the page, because the precedent was set at BBC. GreenJoe 15:14, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

BBC is a worldwide broadcaster. CBC outside of Canada can mean "complete blood count" or "Congressional Black Congress" or any number of things. I work at the CBC and I think this should remain a disambiguation page. JohnnyB 15:41, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Can you prove that you work there? Your reasoning about BBC is flawed. GreenJoe 15:54, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Does it matter if I work there or not? Read the rest of this talk page. "CBC" doesn't necessarily mean the Corp outside of Canada. JohnnyB 15:56, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The reasoning is not flawed. The precedent mentioned is only a valid comparison if the two corporations are comparable. One of the points being made is that they are not. They may share similar ownership models, quality levels, and even intentions, but the BBC is a global brand with widely available channels such as BBC World (even shown on some international aircraft, in addition to being available on all continents except perhaps Antarctica...) — apart from their internet service, can CBC claim the same? (That's a genuine question, although I believe at the moment the answer is "no".) – Kieran T (talk) 16:00, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
When people at the CBC are calling abroad, we can never say that we're from the CBC. We have to say were from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. I've even heard people say, "It's like the BBC in Canada." JohnnyB 16:08, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
JohnnyB's point is that the British broadcaster is the most widely understood meaning of "BBC" in all English-speaking countries worldwide. It's not the only meaning, but it's the most widely understood one. The Canadian broadcaster, however, is not the most widely understood meaning of "CBC" anywhere outside of Canada. These things are determined by "primary topic" rules that take only the thing itself into account (i.e. "is this topic the universal primary meaning for this title"), not by context-ignoring precedents set by national public broadcasters in other countries.
GreenJoe, I'd invite you to pursue WP:RFC if you still feel strongly about this, but speaking as an administrator I'm hereby advising everybody that this revert war needs to stop now. I will start using warnings and temporary editblocks if it continues. Bearcat 22:00, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Protected

[edit]

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't the protection be on the version that existed before the edit war started? JohnnyB 13:37, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Change order?

[edit]

I guess I'm a bit late for the discussion, but couldn't we fix most issues by having CBC a dab page with Canadian Broadcasting Corporation at the top, per ABC, CTV? -M.Nelson (talk) 04:12, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Move discussion in progress

[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Canadian Broadcasting Corporation which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 01:01, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
