Wankster's true etymology

[edit]

Wankster is a portmanteau of the words wannabe and gangster. Just because it has the word "wank" in it does not mean that it deals with "wanking". That definition is most likely wrong.

If anyone checks with the sources below, the majority of the posters on that site identify it as a portmanteau of "wannabe" and "gangster".

Yeah, I don't think the American-born 50 Cent would be that up on his British dialect to fuse gangster and an entirely alien word like "Wanker."

What the hell is a wanker anyway? 65.120.87.195 15:33, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you actually read the definition of wanker you would know it doesn't mean somebody who masturbates. And the word is wanksta, not wannsta. And "wanker" is a fairly well known word in America. It may not be used very often, but like "loo", "bloke", and "fish and chips", most people know the meaning of it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lisaluvsthakids (talkcontribs) 03:32, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If it's really from wanker there should be a note citing a source. But I'm in agreement that the type of people who made up this word probably don't use "wanker" much if ever. 71.199.123.93 (talk) 00:52, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I also agree that there should be a source. I think for now it would make sense to either excise the etyomology or qualify it as debated. I strongly doubt as well that gangstas are up on their british slang...

Furthermore, the insertion of a k doesn't necessarily imply the blending of "wanker", to me it only displays that the originator of the term was implicitly aware of his pronunciation of "gangsta" with a /k/ phoneneme inserted preceding the /t/. This is a pretty standard pronunciation and is transcribed in Merriam-Webster. The word "wanksta" is actually closer to "gangsta" than your proposed "wannsta". And honestly, what kinda "gangsta" would coin a word like "wannsta"? It just sounds lame!

AFAIC, I would say that the two alternatives would be "wangsta" or "wanksta" as being closer to "gangsta". The first would be for those who don't pronounce an insert /k/ phoneme, but I'd bet they are in the minority, and also, "wangsta" is likely too close to "wang". Shouldn't there be a part in this article about it being referenced by Family Guy at the MTV Video Music Awards? The reference can be seen here[1] Gamedude507 02:36, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
