Merger of this page with Shimoga district Dineshkannambadi 18:17, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit]

I have cleaned up quite a bit. I am going to add some neat photos too. I forgot to log in a few times, but all recent edits were made by me. Please add any good photos you may have especially from Sharavathi WLS, Gudavi or Mandagadde BS, Agumbe, Kodachadri etc. I feel there is no need to have seperate wiki pages for Shimoga district and Shimoga town. They can be merged. I have included Shimoga town related details in the page for the district itself. Please add more details about "demographics", "Economy", "culture" if possible,. I have added very useful info to most of the Tourist places, "History" and "Places of antiquity" which I recently visited. So if it is ok with you guys, i will do a redirect from page "Shimoga" to Shimoga District. Please let me know if there is a problem with this and we can discuss.

Khadi Shankarappa

[edit]

I have removed the following lines from the History section; With these lines occupying the majority of the history section, the "History of Shimoga" was looking more like the biography of one person:

"Khadi Shankarappa - A freedom fighter: K. Shankarappa who is known as Khadi Shankarappa is the person responsible for the spread of khadi movement in the district. He along with S.R. Nagappa Shetty started Sudarshana Khadi Nilaya during 1930s in Shimoga. He devoted his life to popularise Khadi and established the Khadi Mandira in Shimoga and was also responsible for establishment of weaving centres in Shimoga district. He was imprisioned several times during the freedom struggle, but he continued working, underground, as a khadi karyakartha.

After India gained independence, Khadi Shankarappa devoted his service to the movement of Co-operation in the district. He served City Co-operative Bank, City Co-operative Society in several capacities. Mr. Shankarappa has published his memories titled "Antharya" which was released in 1999. It is a historical document of the freedom struggle of the district. He expired on 27th April 2005, leaving his family, hundreds of admirers, friends and khadi karyakarthas who were inspired by his teachings."

weather

[edit]

I plan to remove the entire section on weather, which contains this text:

"The weather is pleasant throughout the year except during the summer when the temperature reaches a maximum of 40 degree Celsius. The water resource is more than good since many rivers originate here. Public utility land resource is sufficient, especially the stretch of the national highway between Sagar and Shimoga. If the infrastructure of the city is worked upon Shimoga will be an ideal location for most IT companies. IT companies can find place Between Bhadravathi and Shimoga also ..Bhadravathi is a place of Industries and known for well known good Educational Institutions ."

The first line is the only one that actually deals with weather, and this can simply be moved elsewhere. The rest of it is not related to weather, and the author's ideas about whether or not Shimoga is a good destination for software companies is not only POV, but un-encyclopedic and speculative. Just to clarify, I am from SHimoga myself, and perfectly proud of it. --ashwatha 10:04, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Noted personalities

[edit]

I would like to start a discussion on the noted personalities listed in this article; It lists a number of people that I have never heard of, even though have lived in and around Shimoga for 20 years. I think this section needs to list only the list of people from SHimoga who are noted on a national or state level. Being noted just in Shimoga should not really count, IMHO. However, I am not going to do a mass cleanup of this list right now, since I would like to hear others' opinions as well. --ashwatha 10:17, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

H ghulam Abid was a great person and a lawyer by profession won important cases. He was congress president for 28years -longest period in Karnataka state by any other. He was nominated as MLA candidate twice and was shimoga urban development Authority chairman. there is road on his name and he was a freedom fighter himself. I don't this his name should be deleted. He is a Tall Muslim Leader from Karnataka. Pls find article below where Jeffers sheriff shows how he cut the lok Sabah seat of Mr Ghulam Abid. http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2011-12-27/bangalore/30561327_1_s-bangarappa-shimoga-lok-sabha-kpcc-president — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.200.21.204 (talk) 19:25, 19 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup

[edit]

I will also be removing the cleanup tag on this page, since a lot of unecessary information has now been cleaned. --ashwatha 03:29, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Weaather data not realistic?

[edit]

The average temperature given for Shimoga looks misleading; there is little difference shown for summer and winter temp. But in reality, the difference is large, the average temp for april should come around 34 c.Rayabhari (talk) 17:26, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Names of Hotels

[edit]

The Accommodation subheading has a list of names of Hotels, but displaying names of Hotels on a page of wikipedia, which is a encyclopedia, is not appropriate and such display of names may be considered as Advertisement also, which is not permitted in Wiki. So hotel names deleted. Shimoga page requires further improvement, to the standards of pages other good pages of Wiki.Rayabhari (talk) 12:50, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Notable persons from Shimoga District

[edit]

A word of advice, before adding any names, please make sure if there is enough hits on the name when googled, just to make sure he is popular! For eg., there is a lot difference in adding the name kuvempu and my neighbour. ShriramTalk 06:02, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Right. One more point I observed - lot of people whose insertion is more appropriate in Shimoga District article appear in this article! I think it is right time to trim the list of notable people from Shimoga (that is, Shimoga town only). Please comment. Rayabhari (talk) 14:46, 8 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you are right. The list is growing. Need to consider only those who are from shimoga city or shimoga taluk, rest can be included in shimoga district page.ShriramTalk 17:39, 8 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Clean up

[edit]

Over the years, it looks like the article has become a mess. I will try and clean it up. Its on my to-do list, but the list is long, so it might take a while. μTalk 19:39, 9 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Name change

[edit]

The correct name of the article is Shivamogga and not Shimoga. The name of the city was changed from Shimoga to Shivamogga. This article should be renamed Shivamogga. Thanks. 79.23.217.68 (talk) 17:14, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
