Unless "Dyr" in Dyrehaven refers to some early word for Deer, I'd say that a literal translation of Dyrehaven would be the Animal Garden. Deer Garden would be Hjortehaven in Danish. Any thoughts?

I agree. Dyrehaven definitely translates into the Animal Garden/Park.
Having consulted Ordbog over det Danske Sprog (Dictonary of the Danish language) which covers the language from 1700 to 1950 we have the primary definition of "Dyr" as a living being that is neither plant or man. This would indicate that "animal" is the correct translation.
However, reading the entire article article, it also states
Dyr: (nu især dialekt ell. jagtudtryk) dyr, som der gøres jagt på; især om hjortevildt.
which I translate as
Dyr: (now mostly dialectical or hunter's slang) animals, that are hunted; especially concerning deers.
This is why Deer Garden is a valid translation, and perhaps it is the best translation as the animals that where hunted in the park most surely were deers.Link to the article on dyr in the Dictonary of the Danish language

Unsupported Claims

[edit]

Pure hyperbole. The oldest amusement park in the World - um, says who?

Circus Maximus? Arles arena? etc. etc. etc... This "article" is little more than viral marketing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.141.214.225 (talk) 11:47, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I know I'm answering something old. And I have no idea what it said in 07, but now it says "oldest in operation", which is backed by Guinness World Records. 82.211.208.242 (talk) 13:40, 1 September 2015 (UTC)Random Danish guy[reply]

Muncipality

[edit]

AFAIK Bakken is located in Lyngby-Taarbæk kommune, NOT Gentofte kommune. It is correct that Bakken is located near Klampenborg (Gentofte kommune) though. \COPEH 77.212.103.52 (talk) 20:21, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Correct - it is located in Lyngby-Taarbæk kommune. 130.225.243.77 (talk) 17:32, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
