"Underdevelopment" page suggestions

[edit]

Untitled

[edit]

Hello editors, I have several suggestions for this entry, and I hope to add them into the page this month.

Overall, this page's language on "development" and "underdevelopment" in general is rather normalizing as it accepts mainstream frames of "development" indicators as fact (e.g. GDP per capita). It deserves more attention to the frames and (re-)presentations attached to determining whether state or peoples is defined as developed, developing, less developed, and/or underdeveloped.

Also, more sources need to be added: this page has sections for both Modernization and Dependency theories, however no (besides Frank's text on Dependency Theory) classical and seminal works are cited even if alluded to. Additionally, too many complex theories are sidelined to short sentences that deserve more attention.

Lastly, there are general grammatical errors which I plan to address, such as the problematic introduction's closing sentence: "independently of the definition of the term, underdevelopment is a global problem which is have been attributed to different factors; but without an agreement on whether or not are influential, as the race, if they can be considered generic or specific, as the religion, if they have been created by other Nations, the case of the colonialism, or if on the contrary would be something of underdeveloped populations, such as blaming others."

additional reference

[edit]

i propose addition of the Afro-Caribbean author Walter Rodney. If there are no objections or alternate suggestions within a fortnight I intend adding a paragraph referring to his publication 'How Europe Underdeveloped Africa' and a brief summary of its main thrust as related to the topic underdevelopment.

- if I am going about this the wrong way please inform.

Merge with 'developing country'

[edit]

Why not merge this into 'Developing country' as the content is almost entirely about underdeveloped countries? Seems redundant to have an article about both. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Countermereology (talkcontribs) 15:53, 14 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Disagree! this is a encyclopedia, not a newspaper. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Marasmus (talkcontribs) 06:11, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that underdevelopment deserves its own space, but wonder how deeply to delve into the examples of underdeveloped regions since it would overlap with the developing country article. Or what type of of content to include that is relevant but distinct within the two page. Yfamiloni (talk) 23:29, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

OR, NPOV

[edit]

"and then means deliberately created poverty by imperialism,"?? This can't stay unless it's impeccably sourced. Plenty of others too.

Redirect to/Merge with 'Least developed country' or 'International Development'

[edit]

This article is tagged for neutrality issues and has the same general content of these articles but lacks neutral discussion of what qualifies a country as 'underdeveloped.'- Added by Nadhika99 (Talk) 06:28, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

removing POV tag with no active discussion per Template:POV

[edit]

I've removed an old neutrality tag from this page that appears to have no active discussion per the instructions at Template:POV:

This template is not meant to be a permanent resident on any article. Remove this template whenever:
  1. There is consensus on the talkpage or the NPOV Noticeboard that the issue has been resolved
  2. It is not clear what the neutrality issue is, and no satisfactory explanation has been given
  3. In the absence of any discussion, or if the discussion has become dormant.

Since there's no evidence of ongoing discussion, I'm removing the tag for now. If discussion is continuing and I've failed to see it, however, please feel free to restore the template and continue to address the issues. Thanks to everybody working on this one! -- Khazar2 (talk) 22:50, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on Underdevelopment. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether. I made the following changes:

Overall Page Feedback

[edit]

Hello,

This page is on the right track in terms of potential content, but each of the actual sections is (ironically) underdeveloped. The intro was poorly edited and doesn't provide a holistic description of underdevelopment. The history section has the potential to have its own subsections and the "examples" section doesn't seem like it was thought through. I plan to reorganize and clean up most of these sections as well as add to the sections on theory at the end of the page because they're also important.

Some of the sources I plan to use are:

-Frank, André G. (1969). Latin America: Underdevelopment or Revolution. -Nunn, N. (2007). Historical legacies: A model linking Africa's past to its current underdevelopment. Journal Of Development Economics, 83157-175. doi:10.1016/j.jdeveco.2005.12.003 -Rostow, W. W. (1990). “The Five Stages of Growth.” In Development and Underdevelopment: The Political Economy of Global Inequality, eds. Seligson, Mitchell A. and John T. Passé-Smith. Boulder and London: Lynne Rienner Publishers -Tell, T. (2014). State formation and underdevelopment in the Arab world.Lancet (London, England), 383(9915), 480-482. doi:10.1016/S0140-6736(13)62548-9

Thanks for all your effort and feedback. Yfamiloni (talk) 08:17, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
