Definition

[edit]

Racial profiling definition states in wiktionary that: "The practice (usually considered discreditable), by some police and other officials, of treating members of certain racial groups as more likely to be involved in criminal or other antisocial behavior than members of other racial groups." It is similar to bias and mistreatment to certain ethnic group. The Supermind (talk) 17:10, 17 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Academic debate

[edit]

This whole section on the "Academic debate" around racial profiling is weird to me. I understand that philosophers have varying ideas on this topic, but I don't think Wikipedia should be the platform for which these are debated. Racial profiling exists, it has harmful consequences, and that is what the article should focus on. This whole philosophical debate is interesting but belongs in an opinion essay, ethics paper, or blog. I think the entire "Pro" section should be deleted to mitigate the high risk here for implicit bias and persuasive tones. The "Cons" section actually does a good job at explaining the violent implications of racial profiling in a neutral tone and with good sources/citations, so I think it could stand alone as its own main dropdown section, with a new title, for example "Harmful consequences" or "Implications of racial profiling."
