THE BASICS OF WATER POLO

[edit]

The sport of water polo is very complex. In layman’s terms according to dictionary.com “[water polo] a game played in a swimming pool by two teams of swimmers who try to throw an inflated ball into the opponent’s goal.”

Water polo is thought to have originated in the lakes and rivers of England in the nineteenth century. It is called water polo because it’s played in the water and the original ball they played with came from India, and in India the word for ball is “Pulu.”

Arguably the driver is the hardest position. They have to be the fastest in the water, be able to read the defense in the least amount of time possible, be willing to go all out at all times, and have an accurate shot and pass.

Being left handed is a great advantage in the sport. Because there aren’t very many left handed people, coaches train the players to defend right handed people. This makes it hard for less experienced players, because they have to do everything they were taught backwards.
