Derry/Londonderry

[edit]

the city is widely known as both "Derry" and "Londonderry", so in both the interests of impartiality, and of this being an encylopedia which contains as much information as possible, it surely does make sense to list both names! --feline1 22:40, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Merge proposal

[edit]

I propose we merge this article with List of villages in Northern Ireland and call it List of towns and villages in Northern Ireland. The two lists aren't very long and I see no reason why they should be kept apart. The new article would include the definitions of 'town' and 'village', and the towns would be written in bold.
Thoughts? ~Asarlaí 09:59, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm as there aren't many towns i think that if the two articles are merged then at least the towns should be kept in a seperate section, however as there isn't that many towns they don't need to have alphabet links? They could maybe just be put into a simple list with columns so that they aren't all in one big single column. Mabuska (talk) 15:42, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be fine with either layout. ~Asarlaí 16:35, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm i don't know why the cities are listed along with the towns - they should also be kept seperate from towns and villages. Mabuska (talk) 20:02, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Again, I'd be fine with either. The "cities" are already listed at List of cities in the United Kingdom, but Armagh, Newry and Lisburn are also classed as "large towns" so perhaps those could be left in. ~Asarlaí 20:22, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Since it's been ten days and there aren't any objections, should I go ahead with the merge? ~Asarlaí 21:47, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think we should still mention the NI cities in the article as it is specific to NI unlike the UK wide city article. Though obviously that'll mean the proposed title would be technically wrong, however the name List of settlements in Northern Ireland might work better instead? Mabuska (talk) 21:35, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I just found out that List of settlements in Northern Ireland already exists, although it's based solely on the 2001 Census info. I suppose we could keep that as a standalone article—there's something similar for the Republic.
If we include everything except Belfast and Derry the title will still be correct because Armagh/Newry/Lisburn are classed as both towns and cities. I doubt anyone would kick up a fuss if we did mention Belfast and Derry though. ~Asarlaí 22:31, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There appears to be quite a few articles dealing with essentially the same thing, and i wonder should we merge the List of settlements in Northern Ireland article with these two? Mabuska (talk) 10:23, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'll go ahead with the proposed merge first of all and we can decide if anything else needs merged afterwards. ~Asarlaí 19:39, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As Jean-Luc Picard would say - make it so! And i realised you just did as when i hit edit it said the section didn't exist lol Mabuska (talk) 20:46, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
