I have removed the paragraph "Comparison to translation"

[edit]

In my opinion, it mainly consists of unnecessary explanations which can be easily omitted or moved to a different section. It also mentioned some flaws about interpreting, but not in a very detailed way. Itsused (talk) 07:29, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions for improving the "Types" section

[edit]

The "Public Sector" subcategory under "Types" is rather difficult to parse, and overly generalized. It does not cite any sources at all, and it is vague to the point that I can't understand what it is really trying to say, and with the last line about how an interpreter can hold the life of someone else in their hands, it even gets a little alarmist without explanation. I would recommend expanding the discussion by going into more detail about each different factor, and including examples. For instance, health care interpreting is a relatively new and growing field, which is undergoing a widespread discussion about what the role of the interpreter should be. See a source: http://memberfiles.freewebs.com/17/56/66565617/documents/The%20role_of_health_care_interpreter.pdf This source could be used not only to show an example of the sort of interpreting that happens in the public sector, but also to introduce discussion about how interpreters interact with and affect the environment, people, and conversations taking place. It might be possible to replace the "Public Sector" and "Medical" sections entirely with a more in-depth discussion of the social/moral/legal responsibilities that interpreters have in the various fields and how their role might change according to the kind of interpretation that is needed. For example, the rules governing social interpretation may be much more relaxed than the rules governing medical or legal interpretation.
